Questions about lace front wigs?

Let’s be real. When it comes to cosplay, wigs are DEFINITELY not an easy purchase. There is a lot of thought that has to go into your purchase; does the color work for you, does the shape of the wig work for the styling you need, and how much do you spend? On top of that there are a lot of options out there.

Let’s be real. When it comes to cosplay, wigs are DEFINITELY not an easy purchase. There is a lot of thought that has to go into your purchase; does the color work for you, does the shape of the wig work for the styling you need, and how much do you spend? On top of that there are a lot of options out there.

My FAVORITE wigs are the lace front wigs. While these tend to be pretty pricey I promise you they are absolutely worth it! Especially if this is a cosplay you’ll be doing multiple times.

Lace front wigs are typically made of higher quality material, even if it isn’t real hair it’s typically made of a more heat resistant, easier to manage, synthetic; not to mention they also look a million times more natural.

I highly suggest that when you get a lace front wig you trim the lace down to about 1/4″ past your natural hairline. Then you can blend the rest of the lace into your makeup for a flawless look. If you aren’t too crafty with makeup then trim the lace a bit shorter to keep it hidden, but please don’t trim too closely to the wig’s hair! If you’re nervous about trimming it too short then I recommend folding the remainder of the lace up under the wig and CAREFULLY pin/gel/iron/hair glue the lace in place so it doesn’t pop out.

If you’re looking to style your wig from straight to curly you have options! Figure out the heat resistance that the wig can take (usually it’s no more than 310 but sometimes you get lucky and have it higher). If you’re afraid of using heat Invest in hair rollers and roller clips. Wet down the wig completely and set it in the rollers, make sure the hair is SUPER wet to insure a good curl. Make sure you roll the hair in the direction you want it to fall.

SHEDDING. Lace front wigs are notorious for shedding. This is because of the way the hair is knotted into the wig. Here are a few tips to avoid shedding:

  • Gently comb your wig from tip to root
  • Avoid combing your wig when it is wet
  • Use brushed made specifically for lace wigs
  • Carefully add a small amount of wig glue to each individual knot in the wig
  • Keep the wig on a wig stand or mannequin head when not being worn

I hope this helps with your wig adventure! Let me know if you have any questions that I haven’t covered!
